Psalm 18:3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. FIRST, SOME FACTS:
SO, WHAT’S THE REAL STORY? The events above are horrific, indeed. ISIS certainly needs to be on the wrong end of annihilation before they get a strong foothold in every corner of the world. Currently, they are moving in on the Philippines and Indonesia and authorities expect that any time soon they will declare the Philippines an ISIS caliphate. Currently, the Philippines government, having declared marshal law, is fighting for control of their nation. That’s a serious story. But there is another serious story that is rarely covered by mainstream media and evidence is in the aftermath of the three attacks in Manchester, England, Minya, Egypt and Marawi, Phillipnes. The attacks and murders of innocent Christians appears to be perceived as less newsworthy by the world’s media organizations because these stories receive far less attention. There is a ghost moving around all of these attacks and that is the Christian element, the hatred and targeting of the faithful followers of Jesus Christ. It is a global phenomenon: Christians are the most persecuted group of people on the planet. That’s a big problem; almost a third of the world’s population is Christian. But there is a bigger problem here and it is that the plight of Christians has no equitable significance in the world’s news resources and there seems to be a fog of indifference that blankets the story and smothers its implicit magnitude. In the past week four main events have taken place, thanks to the madness of ISIS: the violence in Manchester, Egypt, The Philippines and Indonesia. The main story of these four has been, overwhelmingly, the Ariana Grande concert bombing in Manchester, England. That story has dominated the news cycles every day since it occurred. There has been coverage of the other three events but by comparison the world’s media focus has mainly been on Manchester. There has been very little reporting, if any, on the Egyptian shootings on mainstream television since the day after the event occurred. A week after the concert bombing every local, national and international news networks persist in running stories on memorials for the slain, interviews with victims and survivors, background investigations into the lives and activities of the ISIS killers and other filler stories to maximize airtime and, presumably, ratings. Not once has there been a story on memorial services or interviews of family members for the Christians slaughtered in either Egypt or in the Philippines. These stories have vacated the news cycle and appear to be of insufficient newsworthiness. WHY? Well, the story is becoming more about why the story is not a story than the story being the story itself. (Yes, that statement does make sense if you read it again.) News media organizations around the planet should be unmasking the persecution of Christians and projecting the plight of the faithful onto the mass population of the earth because it is a big deal when the largest and most influential faith on the planet, the most impactful and most charitable faith based resource is also the most persecuted segment of the human society. But for some inexplicable reason it doesn’t move from the back of the evening news lineup to acquire appropriate air time because, apparently, the news programs and newspapers are not interested in the story of persecuted Christians and that - that - is the story behind the story and it is the story that should move to the very front of the line. Why are Christians being neglected like this? Are the faithful followers of Christ expendable in our culture? Are we unworthy of exposing our persecution, our plight, our struggle to worship in safety without getting our heads cut off, shot up on buses with our children, our dead bodies tossed into ravines and dug out pits? Is that reminiscent of another era in our history? Perhaps the 20th century years of Nazism and the persecution of Jews? Are we so bent on political correctness that we are allowing the faithful and the faith in general to suffer with our backs turned? Any Las Vegas book maker would give you a thousand to one odds if you took the opposing bet that if the tables were reversed and Muslims were being slaughtered the same way by Christians, such a story would be headline news everywhere with mind numbing media saturation. Could you imagine the public outcry? Now THAT would be a story. CNN would be salivating with the flaming lust of exposure. But Christians can’t even get the story arrested. And right now, that is the story about Christian persecution. We need to get the story about the neglect of Christian persecution arrested and put on TV, in print – everywhere. And then perhaps the story will morph into the meat and potatoes of the issue: what are we going to do about the violent persecution of the world’s most peaceful, loving, charitable and merciful faith? WHY? Because, Christian lives matter. Comments are closed.
