CHRIST’S GREATEST MIRACLE: THE MIRACLE OF HOPE Hebrews 11:1 What then is faith? It is what gives assurance to our hopes; it is what gives us conviction about things we can’t see. Miracle: noun mir·a·cle \ˈmir-i-kəl\ …..an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary) Hope is perhaps the greatest miracle of Jesus still being performed today. It has been said that there are three things humans cannot live without:
Since our beginnings, even cavemen lived by these rules of survival. The obvious struggle with sustenance and shelter has jeopardized human life since way back in the hunter gatherer days right up to this very moment. But just as significantly, and simultaneously, the presence of hope in our lives over the millennia has propelled humankind to progress from wearing deerskins to space travel and without life’s expectations manifest as desires within us, in our minds, likely, we would not have made it very far as a species. Hope is what sees us through everything including sustaining shelter and a source and supply of food and drink. Hope is what encourages a baby to put one foot in front of the other. It is what encourages us to live well and prepare for our eventual passing and for eternity. And hope guides and inspires every other forward movement between the two events. Hope is the most significant human thought. It is a seed in the mind's garden from which all life's wishes are grown. It is what sets us apart from animals and makes us people. It propels us to succeed, to take chances, to rebel – to survive some very harsh circumstances: earth is not an easy environment to conquer. But humans have wants and needs and those wants and needs developed hopes to overcome environmental adversities and from there ideas were constructed and those ideas developed plans and from there expectations materialized and from there hopes, again, formed to direct energies toward an ending that met our demands. That is how we made it this far. Yes, remove hope from the book of human existence and there would be no story to tell. God, Christianity is all about hope. Of all the gifts humankind has received from the faith the gift of hope has been incomparable. When the world looks at a cross on a church there are many messages that emanate from that cross for it means so many things; hope, is the greatest statement by the cross. The reason for that is because hope is the greatest statement of the Christian faith. When Christ walked the earth he was a magnet for people seeking God, seeking a change to their lives, seeking help, seeking to be healed, seeking: hope. And through the two thousand years after his death there has been a global drenching of hope that has rained down upon life on earth and altered our existence more significantly than any other aspect of the religion, more so than the acts or words of any scholar, theologian or cult figure or societal leader in history. Christ’s representation of hope is the sky, it’s ubiquitous spirit sails into us, into our every breath, impacting every aspect of life on earth. Imagine life without Christian hope. Would you want to live there? Nothing is more disparaging than hopelessness. Without hope, we cannot move forward. Standing still is a spiritual and a physical death sentence. But a heart of hope will save the world. It did once; it will again. And we need hope now, that's for sure. Because, let’s face it, with politics the way they are, rising crime, failing economies and climate change, the earth needs help and hope in greater abundance than ever before. Comments are closed.
