Matthew 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. In his speech to tens of thousands of supporters in Mobile, Alabama, presidential candidate Donald Trump declared that his book, the Art Of The Deal was his second favorite book of all time. He went further to declare that the Bible was, “the best” and that between the two there was no comparison. It seemed a little trite, unauthentic, with a salesmanship aura around his words and their delivery to the cheering crowd. But as his campaign has marched successfully across America his Christian persona has almost sold me on the possibility of his sincerity. There is just something about Mr. Trump that makes my better judgement stubborn and defiant, pouting in a dark corner waiting for the chance to say I told you so. Before I get too deep into “The Donald” and his connection to Christianity, I just want to mention that long before he announced his candidacy for president of the United States I was telling people my theory that if one were to take everything about the Americans, true and perceived, all the brashness, the wealth, the power, the ego, poverty, racism, crime, debt, bombs and guns and military might, and the trademark narcissistic sense of superiority they espouse, stick it all in a huge caldron and boil it down to a syrup, then let that sit till it began to grow some form of life, well, the life that would grow from this American syrup would be, you guessed it, Donald Trump. I believe he is everything the rest of the world thinks America is, and, he is how most Americans see themselves. Like it or not, the Donald, IS, America. And that explains his whirlwind run for office. His crazy racist hateful off the cuff ranting, bragging and wildly successful run for the top job in the world has landed him in the seat of the Republican Party's official nominee and face to face with his opponent, Hillary Clinton. Say what you want about the Donald's tactics and bizarre behavior on the campaign trail. You can't hate it if it works. And in addition to all his wealth and mouth, the guy is a Christian and an outspoken one to boot. Well, he says he is a Christian and that alone attracts a lot of voters in the US. I just can't tell if he is sincere or not about his faith. I was watching the Republican National Convention and the correspondent began an interview with Pastor Mark Burns of South Carolina and he was asked why he had thrown his support behind Donald Trump. His simple answer was, “Because Mr. Trump said that with him as president, Christians would have a friend in the White House.” Now that makes me lean in Don's favor but for some reason I just can't lean far enough. Yet. To continue, click "Read More" to the right... The pastor continued to elaborate on Trump’s position when it comes to Christian persecution around the globe. And to give him his due, the Donald has been an outspoken advocate for Christian issues. There are plenty of YouTube videos with him talking about the persecution of Christians and how Syrian refugees can enter the US but Syrian Christians cannot; this is also well covered by articles in The Political Insider, an online publication following the rise of Mr. Trump in American politics.
Recently, Donald was born again according to James Dobson, founder of the organization, Focus On The Family. It was reported in every newspaper and magazine and on every news television channel (click her to read about it in The New York Times). It was a big deal which I found to be odd in itself. Precisely why Donald needed to be born again at sixty nine years of age, coincidentally as he runs for the highest office in America, is a question not being asked but, well, it does bring a little more credibility to his Christian Faith claims and his salvation has made my better judgment soften, a little, in Donald’s favor. Why is it so hard for people beyond America’s borders to take anything he says seriously? Europe is all abuzz about the possibility of a Donald presidency. They try not to take him seriously but they are certainly frightened of his rise to power - I even heard it referred to as Nazi-like, or the rise of fascism. Plenty of Americans are taking him seriously enough: He won more votes and delegates in the primaries than any other republican candidate in the history of the United States. He is a very serious candidate and if he continues to debunk the naysayers as he has done, astonishingly, since he announced his run for office, well, come November he just may be elected as President, The Donald, Trump. My better judgment cringes at even the typing of those words.... President, The Donald J. Trump. I take him seriously, don't get me wrong. But my red line in the sand for the Donald, record breaking votes, Christian kumbaya love fests or not, is seeing him actually become president. I mean, seriously? And yet, I think that maybe he would make a great president and fix America and actually be a good friend to Christians in the White House. Maybe he actually would make America great again not that it isn’t great now, but, you know, great according to Trump. Which means rich, richer than the richest anybody else in the rich whole wide world. What a paradox. God help us. That is not a coy remark, Lord. It is a real request. Help us, please. (And yes I am a Canadian and I am sure there are Americans reading this who are less than happy about my comments. Well, deal with it. Because whoever you elect into office, the whole world, including Canadians, have to deal with America in one way or another. So, think about that when you toss the Trump, Clinton coin as you head into the voting booth.) Comments are closed.
