Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” Pablo Picasso The concept of discipleship has been popping up here and there and everywhere in my life. It was the theme behind our pastor’s Sunday sermon a few weeks back and it got me thinking about this thing we Christians call discipleship; where we find our purpose in life and pursue it passionately for the greater good of humankind. And I have learned a lot about this phenomenon and the best thing I found was that I am living that passion; the worst thing I learned is that I am among a very small percentage of people who are fortunate enough to have found their gift and are living in the process of giving it away. I find that sad. But I have no doubt as to why so few people live their passion in life. The problem is, well, life actually. Our twenty-first century, high tech, money, money, money, me, me, me life. Our society is not set up to encourage people to take the time and energy to find their God given gifts that bring meaning to their lives and then more time and energy to develop a purpose to use such gifts to give back to society. I mean, who does that sort of thing? To the average person today the purpose of life is getting by, maybe get ahead at work, to pay the mortgage and put braces on the kids’ teeth, outfit the SUV with new snow tires. Spiritual digging for nuggets of purpose painted gold is what others do who have too much spare time on their hands. Click "Read More" to the right to continue..... 1 Peter 2:21
“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps…” This spiritual investigation is a responsibility of Christians. Finding our gifts and living a life of giving them away, in the Christian faith, is called discipleship and it is the Christian call of duty. We are commanded by Christ to follow his path of charity and helping society and doing so by using our own unique talents and gifts to accomplish this task. While doing this we bring meaning not just to our lives but to life in general. Unfortunately, few people truly answer Christ’s call and instead live, eat, sleep, pay the bills and someday die. Their existence will have come and gone without living life completely, without real fulfillment. And I have to think that somehow the world suffers as a result. Meaning, purpose, gifts? Who has time to soul search for that when the interest rates are climbing and the mortgage is coming up for renewal and your aging parent just broke a hip? The sad thing is that there is illimitable joy to be had when a person does that soul search and discovers what rings their spiritual bell and then hunts down a way to harness their gifts and live that passion in their daily lives. Very few will ever know the power of purpose, of discipleship, of fulfilling the edict of following in Christ’s footsteps. Granted, it isn’t an easy thing to do. It takes devotion, questioning yourself, scrutinizing every aspect of your life, facing hard truths. But the prize at the end of the winding road that finding your purpose is, well, that is utterly life changing. Easily, the happiest people I have come to know are the ones who have discovered their gifts, purpose, meaning and passion in life. Some devote their entire lives to this lifestyle while some make it a pursuit outside of their working career. But that state of being, that way of thinking and breathing in a person’s life turns on a light that glows brightly inside of them, it becomes a blissful consciousness that twinkles and pours out from their eyes. And it just takes a little digging. You don’t have to drop everything and join a traveling folk band and sing songs about angels and climate control. Perhaps your woodworking skills are a part time gift used to build stairways for Habitats For Humanity. Just saying. Thanks to the internet, of course, there are even web sites with data and materials to read and videos to watch and even quizzes to take to assist one on finding there gifts, developing the meaning of their lives, bringing purpose to their world – how to answer the call from Christ to continue his work by meeting the Christian responsibility of discipleship.
