Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Imagine for a second that you wake up tomorrow and when you turn on the news you hear that a major western country has boldly announced that it has always been and from that day forward demands that it will always be referred to as a dominantly Christian nation and that it preferred that in the future only Christians apply for immigration. OMG! Imagine the backlash. I can hear the quick gasps for oxygen and the dumbfounded sighing releases. Such a nation would be an instant global pariah accused of all sorts of isms: racism, fascism, totalitarianism, narcissism, faithism, and there would be protests in the streets everywhere. Well, such a thing has taken place, albeit on a much smaller scale: Mayor Laslo Toroczkai of the town of Asotthalom, Hungary, has declared his town of ten thousand residents to be a Christian town and he has put out the call for immigrants, to grow the town's population, with the restrictions that applicants be Christian, non Muslim, and straight. Yup. That's what he said on the BBC. He went on to claim that the reason for his restrictions is that Europe's experiment with multiculturalism over the past few decades has not worked and has only succeeded in weakening the Christian presence in all of the great European Christian nations. He feels that there is no problem with being a Christian nation and added that there are Muslim nations, black nations in Africa, a great Indian nation, China and others and that is the way it has always been and European nations should return to being Christian and there is nothing wrong with that. He parlayed a sort of, "if they can do it, why can't Christians?" Today, due to political correctness, bleeding heart liberalism or whatever you want to call it, we are afraid to agree with the mayor's point but a lot of what he is saying is true. Why can't there be Christian nations? And yes, almost all of Europe was made up of great, historic Christian countries and yes, multiculturalism has diluted their identities. And it is mainly due to Muslim immigrants who refuse to adopt the national culture of the country in which they chose to live. Reverse this scenario and ask yourself if Muslim, Indian (Hindu) or Asian (Buddhist) countries would tolerate the same lack of care for their culture if hundreds of thousands, millions, of Christians emigrated to their lands. What do you think would happen if blond haired, blue eyed Christian women in mini skirts wearing gold crosses around their necks started showing up on the streets of Riyadh? It is unlikely that Christians would be as welcome in other nations as other nations’ citizens have been welcomed in Christian societies. Click "Read More" to the right to continue.... Why is it alright for anybody but Christians to put up a fence around a chunk of land and call it a Christian nation without being accused of racial inequality or human rights violations? Such accusations are not tossed toward Yemen, or Saudi Arabia, Iran, China or India, all of whom openly discourage Christian emigration, all of whom currently engage in the persecution of Christians and the oppression of the Christian faith worldwide.
Is it because most Christians are white? Because that is just not true. Unlike the other major religions, Christianity is comprised of every nationality, colour and creed known to humanity. We welcome the diversity of our species. Can the same be said about Islam in say, Egypt or Syria or among the Sikhs in Sri Lanka? I live and work in Canada's largest city, Toronto, population around three million. It has become a racial melting pot over the past few decades and that has been fine and actually, a wonderful aspect of our city. In the past ten years or so there has been a surge of Muslim immigrants and now we see the explosion of mosques being built, entire communities taken over by Muslim immigrants dressed in burkas, hijabs and men in their long linen traditional gowns and signs in their neighbourhoods now include Arabic and sometimes exclude English. The city is changing and people do not like what is happening. We sense our distinct Canadian Christian culture is changing and it won't be long before sharia law is woven into our current laws. There have been, so far, unsuccessful attempts to include sharia law in the Canadian judicial system. But it's just a matter of time before we are forced to consider the stoning of unfaithful women or the beheading of non believers, the tossing of gays from buildings or the chopping off of the hands of thieves. So, Canada, a great Christian nation, due to immigration, and in particular Muslim immigration since they seem to be the most vocal about having their faith and laws lifted parallel to cultural Canadian traditions, is losing its face, its gentle Christian face that was such a distinct part of the country's identity. It was one of the things about being Canadian that made me most proud. I sense that is beginning to take place in America, too. It has certainly happened in all of the historically Christian nations of Europe. My great fear is not so much the loss of lands, but of the world losing the great power and symbol of goodness that Christianity is; the greatest force of goodness on the planet. As we dilute the presence and authority of Christianity within our borders we soften our voice around the world and that would be detrimental to humanity. And if you think of an alternate voice replacing the Christian voice or rising to compete with its authority, say the voice of Islam, well, what do you think the world will hear then? What will the world sound like? A utopic world would be either a planet where all nations get along and pursue faith and beliefs freely. Or, a world where one faith exists and everyone believes the same thing. Or, perhaps, a world where, after a couple hundred years of multicultural breeding, all citizens are beige, have black hair and brown eyes and worship the same God. Maybe that is what's going on. Maybe we are in the early stages of the beigeing of humankind; those primary, warring, destructive stages that preceded every great human societal shift in our history. Growing pains, so to speak, while we mix races and religions and become beige Christlims, or beige Buddianlims, or beige MusHinduddians. That would certainly bring an end to racism and faithism. A world where everyone looks the same and believes in the same God. What would be left to fight about? Plenty; humans will never tire of fighting. Right now, it's the quieting of that beautiful Christian voice that screams at me to remain vigilant and to do my small part to ensure that Christianity continues to be heard regardless of what is going on in the big picture of humanity.
