Psalm 31:15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. I have been trying to write this blog for a couple of months now but each time I think I have covered all that I want to say something else is reported in the press or new statistics prop up that either exasperate the issue or take it to new pernicious heights that require investigation. Literally, from my experience digging into the phenomenon of global Christian persecution, its dynamics seem to be changing almost daily. That tells me, more than I previously thought, that something big is going to come of all this. Something very, very big lays in wait behind this storm. Thousands of Christians are murdered each year for no other reason than for their love of Christ. Thousands. Some think that number is much higher. Tens of thousands of churches and other Christian properties are destroyed or burned; tens of thousands of followers are raped, beaten, imprisoned or subject to abuse of some form. And this evil seems to be spreading across the planet like some insuppressible, malevolent bacteria. Violence against Christians and the faith has been reported on every continent in the world with the exception of North America and Europe. The worst violators are the middle east, east Africa, India and neighbouring South Asian countries and of course, China, and North Korea and the list is growing. It astounds me that this phenomenon does not command the front pages of newspapers around the world. In infuriates me that our political leaders seem to be avoiding the topic for certainly their security briefings have including the persecution of Christians over the past few years. There is an American election going on right now and the only candidate to speak about Christian persecution is Donald Trump and frankly, I can’t make up my mind which is more frightening: Christian persecution statistics growing exponentially or, Donald Trump being elected as president of the USA. What’s going on? Click "Read More" to the right to continue.... About a week or so ago, Father Jacques Hamel, 85 years of age, of the Saint-Etienne-du Rouvray, in Normandy, had his throat cut while two nuns, taken hostage, were forced to watch. The two killers were Muslim jihadists and credit for the horror was claimed by ISIL.
It faded from the news cycle within seventy two hours. Imagine that an Imam had his throat cut by a Christian in a mosque during prayer. Now imagine the outrage. Think of the fallout, political, street level, its coverage by the global press – imagine Islamic reaction. I guarantee you if there were thousands of Muslims being killed and beaten with mosques being burned down by Christians simply out of hatred for their faith it would be a huge deal in the global press. Is it really just more acceptable to society that Christians face persecution and violence? Are Christians that expendable? Something just isn’t right here when considering the importance and the impact of Christianity on our world. As I have said in previous blogs, just close your eyes and remove everything Christian from the world, like it was never there – what kind of a world do you see? Want to live there? What more needs to be said? As in any great human endeavour, crisis or movement, an educated, knowledgeable population is key to understanding and creating resolutions to such phenomenon. Don’t wrap your head around a problem without wrapping the problem around your head, first. Know it, accept it, change it, move on. And with that philosophical ending to this blog post I have listed below some online resources that will provide statistical information and links to organizations who are trying to shed light on this issue by offering information and proactive opportunities to get involved such as email campaigns to the press, reports on violence and oppression, letters to world leaders and politicians among other ways for the individual to get involved and bring about change.
