The Now Of Christ: This is a blog series about the miracles of Christ that are performed each and every day of our lives. Charity: An everyday miracle According to the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, this is the definition of the word, miracle: "an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs."
"Let all your things be done with charity." 1 Corinthians 16:14 We Christians are a rare breed, though large in numbers, we are unique in our thoughts, beliefs and in our actions. The concept of and the command for charity in our lives is one of the most powerful messages of the bible and, subsequently, one of the most recognizable attributes of Christian practices. Christ encouraged us to be charitable and to take that act of caring to everyone throughout the world - a command we have honored since his time walking the earth. And because of that, Christian charity is and has always been an unparalleled force of community, goodness, assistance and love; it has been one of the most effective examples of Christian goodness that the world has ever seen. The concept of charity, of Christian charity, has woven itself into the complex fiber of human life from personal acts of kindness to the development of huge non profit, Christian charitable organizations that perform massive acts of kindness and compassion throughout the planet. Each day, Christ's commands for us to be charitable are performed. That simple inspiration to be charitable has certainly transformed our lives and divinely intervened in human affairs and continues to do so..... every single day. More so now that two thousand years ago. There are hundreds, thousands of examples that could be provided here of Christian charity over the centuries. I could list dozens of huge organizations that perform charitable work that help millions of people every day and hundreds of smaller organizations doing the same. I could fill this blog ten times over with just the selfless acts of charity and love by someone like Mother Theresa. But what I like to hear, every now and then, is a story about a Christian charitable act by ordinary individuals doing something extraordinary but at the same time simple and impactful. In Brisbane, Australia, two young men, Lucas Patchett and his friend Nicholas Marchesi, outfitted a van with a washing machine and a dryer - how they did it, the engineering aspects of it are not relevant here, but they did it, got it working, started a free service called Orange Sky Laundry Services and proceeded to drive around the streets of Brisbane day and night doing laundry for the city's homeless population. Imagine that. Two young Christian men, in their early twenties, wanting to do something to help others and expecting nothing in return. That's very cool. Charity lightens the load of the receiver and warms the heart of the giver and fulfills a mandate by God. Where would the world be without the concept of, the impact of, the miracle of, Christian charity? "And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness." Colossians 3:14 Comments are closed.
