Proverbs 4:2
For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. DOG GOD DOGMA Years ago I watched God drive a white delivery van screaming around a corner like he was late for Christmas dinner and he killed a small dog trotting happily across the Sunday morning street, harmless to no one least of all to God : ironically, spelled backward, dog = God. Either way you spell it = man’s best friend. I was on the scene and got to my knees and gave the creature some soft human whispers to harmonize with his desperate canine whimpers. His tongue wiggled slightly like a frail master waving good bye and his tail wagged a little bit and his nose twitched like it was death he could smell laying on the pavement listening to the grim reaper ringing his bell but he seemed sort of happy as his four legged life flashed before his four legged eyes — he was probably dreaming of chasing a ball of light in some long dark tunnel enjoying his last burst of carefree four legged delight. Ultimately his candle went out and I swear I could feel his soul depart and slowly slip from his graying blue eyes up into the hot summer sky as his chest collapsed and expanded and collapsed and expanded and collapsed and emptied for the very last time. I say God was the driver because he is the pilot of souls; he is the apex planner, the front line builder, the supreme giver and taker and he creates the tunnel and he lights the light when our time arrives and only he knows the hows and the whens and the wheres and the whys of our spirit's fall or of its rise, of our flesh demise, of that final destination where our life forces fly to spend eternal peace or infernal damnation. And so, to recap the events of this inglorious day, God drove a truck that pushed a dog into his divine dimension, beyond the reach of human intervention and pulled me into a dark tunnel of blinding existential questions about his seemingly reckless driving decisions and his mysterious working conditions and confusing godly contradictions about love and pain and death and mercy and life and tunnels and a white ball of light that no one can ever touch or hold but it is a process everything must undergo, or so we are told, it is all a matter of faith just as all things are — why? I suppose only He really knows. Just as that day when a dog was killed by God. Why did God kill the dog? I don't know. But he did because I watched it all unfold and to this day I hold the dog’s very last breath in my grieving hands and after all these years I can't seem to understand God’s mysterious ways and I cannot seem to let the curtain fall and bring this drama to a close because I assume that somewhere in all of this death and madness, life and sadness, there are important lessons to behold that I have yet to fully comprehend, that I have yet to truly come to know. Anyway, it's all a part of God's master plan as everything is and in this case a dog was killed by a divine delivery van and surrendered to his holy canine destiny – such events fill the pages of history because our fate, God’s plan, is dogma that we have always believed and it has defined our existence since the first sun painted the first horizon with gold and majesty and relentless mystery. In this case a dog was taken by God and we shouldn’t question His actions and instead fall mouths shut, eyes closed onto our faith. Besides, it is our living God we are speaking about and undoubtedly He certainly wouldn't kill a dog without a meaningful story to be told for every life is a link in his holy chain, and every chain is full of holy holes filled with brilliant existential questions relying on the tunnel light of faith to help us trust and fully know what God truly wants us to know. I saw God kill a dog. Why? Perhaps, I will never truly know. But I have faith that it was right because dogma and God say it is so. Right, even if my bleeding heart says no. Comments are closed.
